Texas Southern University
Robert Earl Moreland Sr. was born in Utica, Mississippi, on November 10, 1938, and grew up with a strong emphasis on God, family, education, and hard work. He attended Tougaloo College on an athletic scholarship and later became a renowned basketball coach, most notably at Texas Southern University (TSU), where he served as head coach for 27 seasons, leading the team to a NAIA championship in 1977. Moreland holds the record for the most wins in TSU Tiger history with 406 victories and was named Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Coach of the Year five times. In recognition of his achievements, TSU renamed the basketball court "Coach Moreland Court" in his honor in 2010, and he was inducted into the SWAC Hall of Fame in 2007, with his induction into the TSU Sports Hall of Fame planned for October 2024. Moreland, remembered as a "builder of men" and a devoted family man, passed away on July 29, 2024, at the age of 85 in Houston, Texas.
The Coach Robert Moreland Memorial Endowed Scholarship will benefit the student-athletes and the needs of the Texas Southern basketball programs for generations to come.
